The Works BBS Faucet represents nothing.
The Works Glossary
The WORKS BBS was and is a Bulletin Board System (BBS) specializing in text files and information. Its primary goal has been to provide a central repository for all sorts of cultural flotsam that could potentially be lost in the crush of mass media and censorship that has pervaded society for centuries.

Beyond that, it was a really cool thing to do.

The Works did not exist in a vacuum; its founding in March of 1986 was the direct result of previous years of Hacker and other BBS's, the modem sub-culture that had started to take a firm hold in peoples' lives, and the rapidly-expanding accessibility of the Personal Computer. For this reason, the maintainers of this site have decided to revive the early history of the Works, to give an even more comprehensive view of this BBS world, and what it truly meant to us and the others involved in it.

Attempts have been made to capture what was going on at this time, and some of these attempts have been right on the mark, while others have been nothing but sensationalistic tabloid overviews of the hysterical side of media portrayals. We want to cover everything that was left out. This could have been a book, but books take publishers, and publishers take the safe route, and safety isn't the issue here. This all might end up as a CD-ROM; that would be potentially satisfying and make the world of the BBS known to all who would take an interest, voyeurs and participants both.

However this goes, know what is being attempted here: Nothing less than a complete framework, glossary, and history of what went on at this time. We'll categorize, analyze, and try to see what this world meant. We might even bring the participants close again. Who knows. But at least we're trying.
